Where do I begin?.. I haven’t yet decided the direction I plan to take with this blogging thing. A few things are obvious at this point, my focus will (of course) be skin related, I will fret about grammatical errors, and I will likely write full paragraphs before deleting them and starting again, over and over again, until I wonder why I started this thing in the first place.

But as a failing perfectionist I will give this a go regardless. My name is Katie, I am 23 years old, I am a qualified Beauty Therapist (don’t laugh) and I am currently unemployed. Don’t get me wrong I am trying, but there isn’t much going on in little old New Zealand at the moment, plus it is not painting nails and waxing vaginas that takes my fancy; but skin. So, my days are mostly consumed with study towards an Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science. Put simply I learn the non-invasive skin care treatments, IPL, Laser, Chemical peels- skin stuff.. no not dermatology. It seems very few people realise that dermatologists are fully fledged doctors with a minimum of 13years education under their belt. I wish I had the preservation, determination and well- money, to achieve that.. Oh and not to mention the intellect!! Instead I have passion, interest and desire, not sure how those will pay the bills but they are there.. sometimes.

So, why am I doing this? I need to overcome my desire to do well at things. I have decided that the school system sucks and I am partly a product of that environment. I found primary school easy, I didn’t have to try, I wasn’t amazing but I wasn’t bad either, I flew under the raider. Come the serious end of High School I had no idea how to truly study, I was lazy, and I am not a naturally lazy person (on the most part). By the time I realised I needed education I had rent, electricity and bills to pay, and, shock horror; I had to actually pay for the course myself. I had to work hard and for the first time in my life- I actually did my homework. To my surprise I found it was easier than forging a note from which ever parent I wasn’t living with that week! Ok granted I was a big fish in a small pond, Beauty and Business Diplomas aren’t hard, but to my credit I did well in both, coming first in the Beauty school and winning an internship in India (another story for another day). But at the end of the day I want and need to do more.

So that brings me to the blog, I am hoping it can be my outlet, a way for me to look back on cringe-worthy first posts such as this, and chart my growth and improving knowledge. I am hoping it will make me accountable for my career and force me to learn and remember more. But most of all, in todays advertising saturated market; I hope to deliver a few truths to help people care for and nourish their skin, and to remind them that it is so much more than ‘cosmetic’. I will of course become a little side tracked along the way with rants about home-brand products, real estate and politics, but you can think of this as gold digging, a lot of shit for a few valuable nuggets!

But that’s enough for today, it’s gardening time.
